Lamborghini Says “non se ne parla nemmeno” To EV Hypercar

By Adam Ferraresi, December 16, 2024

Don’t even talk about it—that’s essentially Lamborghini’s stance on their first-ever hypercar. Okay, I’m paraphrasing, but Lamborghini is firmly committed to delaying the release of its first EV hypercar. They claim it’s because the market isn’t ready, but considering Lamborghini is never short of buyers, the real reason might be that Lamborghini itself isn’t ready and is looking to buy more time.

Electric vehicles are as much about software engineering as they are about hardware, and many legacy automakers have postponed their EV launches due to the challenges of fixing software bugs. Lamborghini appears to be following suit as another legacy brand delaying its first EV release.

Even Tesla, often considered the leader in EVs, has faced delays with new product launches, as seen with the Cybertruck, which still required additional software calibration and updates post-launch. Lamborghini, meanwhile, plans to launch its first electric model in 2029, citing that the time isn’t yet ripe for full electrification in the sports car market segment, according to CEO Stephan Winkelmann.

Lamborghini, a subsidiary of Volkswagen, had previously announced that its first EV would debut in 2028. Meanwhile, Italian rival Ferrari is set to launch its first EV model in the first quarter of next year.

Stephan Winkelmann said at a recent press conference held at the company’s headquarters in Sant’Agata:

“We do not think 2029 is too late to introduce an electric car. We believe that, in our segment, the market will not be ready by 2025 or 2026,”
