Jaecoo is a brand that only a select few have heard of—primarily motoring journalists and fleet managers. These brands are owned and operated by China’s state-run Chery Automobiles. While Jaecoo currently has a modest foothold in the UK, the brand is poised to expand its plug-in hybrid sales strategy by offering European-quality vehicles at more affordable prices. The closest competitor to Jaecoo is Skoda, which offers the Kodiaq plug-in hybrid SUV starting at £45K.
Jaecoo is promoting its so-called “Super Hybrid System” (SHS), developed using third-generation hybrid technology from their parent company, Chery Group. While we cannot verify the claimed mpg figures—since they are based on WLTP lab testing and thus may not reflect real-world performance—the total range is reported to be approximately 745 miles. The SHS powertrain is designed to ensure that the electric battery remains charged and never drops to 0%.
The JAECOO 7 SHS powertrain features a 1.5-liter TDGI petrol engine (143 bhp, 215 Nm) with six technologies developed to improve efficiency and performance, including turbocharging, intelligent combustion, and thermal management systems. A hybrid transmission with cooling and control technologies enhances fuel efficiency and smooth operation.
The 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery provides a yet-to-be-verified 56-mile electric range and includes a triple-layer design for impact resistance and safety. The SHS powertrain delivers a total power output of 255 kW (347 bhp) and 525 Nm of torque, enabling the JAECOO 7 SHS to accelerate from 0–100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds and 0–50 km/h (31 mph) in 3.8 seconds.
The JAECOO 7 SUV will come with a choice of petrol or plug-in hybrid (SHS) powertrains, priced from £29,435 and £35,065 respectively.
