From Nowhere Franco Colapinto Has Become A $20M Man

By James Broughton, November 12, 2024

Franco Colapinto, once an unknown with a modest junior open-wheel racing background, has unexpectedly become a $20 million target for Red Bull Racing, according to the F1 rumor mill. The Argentine driver, who replaced the underperforming Logan Sargeant at Williams, quickly demonstrated speed and consistency, making an immediate impact by scoring points in his debut race for the back-of-the-field Williams Racing team.

Initially overlooked in the F1 paddock, 21 year old Colapinto was regarded as a mere shadow, a reserve driver, a “backup singer” expected to spend his career in the team’s simulator. Now, however, he carries a $20 million price tag. Ironically, despite this newfound interest from top teams, Colapinto has no confirmed seat for next season.

Colapinto is currently holding down the Williams race seat, awaiting the arrival of Carlos Sainz in 2025. Rumors suggest that Williams has doubled its release price for Colapinto’s contract, with Red Bull Racing reportedly offering $15 – $20 million to secure his signature.

A second team, believed to be Alpine, has also entered the race to sign him. Williams, however, is unwilling to release Colapinto cheaply, even though they have already confirmed their 2025 F1 lineup with Carlos Sainz set to join Alex Albon. Williams is also exploring a potential loan arrangement to keep Colapinto’s options open.
