2025 Toyota 4Runner goes hybrid for $53,440

The Toyota 4Runner—one of the longest-running SUV nameplates—adds a hybrid powertrain option as part of its 2025-model-year redesign. But it’s only available on higher trim levels.

Non-hybrid 4Runner models with the standard 2.4-liter turbo-4 cost $42,220 with the mandatory $1,450 destination charge, but the least-expensive hybrid version is the TRD Off-Road at $53,440 with destination.

The hybrid powertrain is a $2,800 option on the TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, and Limited grades, with the latter two starting at $59,220 and $61,670 in hybrid form, respectively. It’s also standard on the Platinum ($64,310), Trailhunter ($68,350), and TRD Pro ($68,350) grades.

Hybrid models add an electric motor to the standard 2.4-liter turbo-4 and 8-speed automatic transmission, upping output from 278 hp and 317 lb-ft to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. Hybrids come standard with four-wheel drive and an EPA-estimated 23 mpg combined (23 mpg city, 24 mpg highway).

That’s a small improvement over the 22 mpg combined and 21 mpg combined of non-hybrid models with rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, respectively. But some non-hybrid grades surpass the hybrid in highway mpg. Toyota estimates 25 mpg highway for four-wheel drive SR5, Sport, Sport Premium, TRD Off-Road, and TRD Off-Road Premium models and 26 mpg highway for SR5, Sport, and Sport Premium models with rear-wheel drive.

The 4Runner also has essentially the same powertrain used in the reconstituted Toyota Land Cruiser, and the two SUVs share Toyota’s TNGA-F architecture. The Land Cruiser comes standard with a hybrid powertrain, but at a base price of $57,900 that’s higher than the entry point for a 4Runner hybrid.

Output and fuel economy are identical, and both models offer substantial off-road capability courtesy of mechanical four-wheel drive systems, but the 4Runner offers more choices compared to the Land Cruiser, which is only available in two grades for 2025.

That means customers now have two rugged Toyota hybrid SUVs to choose from, and the automaker has strongly hinted at an all-electric model with its Compact Cruiser EV and Land Cruiser Se concepts.
