2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid adds LE, Nightshade Edition models

  • An LE base model and darker Nightshade trim join the 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid lineup
  • The 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is expected to get up to 36 mpg combined
  • The 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid costs $45,660

The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid crossover SUV lineup grows for 2025, adding two more variants.

A Nightshade Edition based on the Limited grade includes black exterior trim and 20-inch wheels, a treatment Toyota has given many of its other hybrids at this point. The Grand Highlander LE serves as the new entry-level model, but still includes standard features like eight-passenger seating, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitors, and a power tailgate.

Toyota continues to offer the Grand Highlander with gasoline, hybrid, and higher-output Hybrid Max powertrains. Front-wheel drive is standard with the XLE, Limited, and Nightshade models. All-wheel drive is available on those grades and standard on the LE, as well as all models with the Hybrid Max powertrain.

The base hybrid teams a 2.5-liter inline-4 with Toyota’s familiar planetary hybrid system for 245 hp, compared to 265 hp from the 2.4-liter turbo-4 used in non-hybrid models.

The Hybrid Max combines the turbo-4 with a different hybrid system, which appears similar to the one used in the Toyota Crown Max, with a motor-equipped transmission in front and a separate motor for the rear wheels. This generates 362 hp, which Toyota says will get the Grand Highlander from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds and enable a 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity.

EPA fuel-economy ratings are expected to carry over from the 2024 model year, meaning a best of 36 mpg combined (37 mpg city, 34 mpg highway) for the XLE with front-wheel drive. XLE models with all-wheel drive, LE models, and Limited models with front-wheel drive are rated at 34 mpg combined (36 mpg city, 32 mpg highway). Limited models with all-wheel drive are rated at 33 mpg combined (35 mpg 31 mpg highway), and Hybrid Max models are rated at 27 mpg combined (26 mpg city, 27 mpg highway).

Hybrid models are priced from $45,660 with the mandatory $1,450 destination fee, for the new-for-2025 LE grade. But it’s possible to spend as much as $60,225, for a Platinum model with the Hybrid Max powertrain.

Introduced for the 2024 model year, the Grand Highlander packs an impressive amount of space for its mpg, which is actually slightly ahead of the small Toyota Highlander in some configurations. Toyota is reportedly considering reassigning the latter name to a new three-row electric SUV to be built in the U.S.
